Over Sassari, Italy, the setting sun becomes the backdrop for massive starling flocks swirling through the sky. These shifting shapes, called murmurations, are named after the quiet hum made by countless wings in motion. Scientists think these formations may serve to protect the birds and help them stay warm.

The sight resembles nature performing art in real time, with movement replacing paint and sky replacing canvas.
