A hidden story within a story, created with the technique of fore-edge painting. 📚✨
Fore-edge paintings were a decorative technique popular between the 17th and 19th centuries. Artists painted scenes along the edges of a book’s pages so the image only appeared when the pages were slightly fanned.
This 1925 copy of the novel “Kim” by Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1901, hides a detailed watercolor beneath its gilded edges. The novel follows an orphan boy who becomes entangled in espionage while traveling across colonial India with a wandering Tibetan monk in search of spiritual enlightenment.
Many of these paintings depicted landscapes, cities, or scenes related to the book itself. They were often commissioned by collectors and remain one of the more unusual forms of book decoration.
